2009-2010 proved to be a very successful year in athletics for Viterbo. Here’s a look back, and a look ahead, at each of Viterbo’s athletic squads this school year:

Volleyball

What happened: The V-Hawks placed third in the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC), finishing with a 6-2 record. They posted a 31-11 record overall, including a 10-1 record on their home court. The team fell to St. Ambrose in the championship game of the MCC tournament.

Standout athletes: Heather Harelstad, Jenna Lau, and Amy Braaksma all received First Team All-Conference honors. Harelstad, a senior, was named Libero of the Year in the MCC. In addition, senior Abby Breitung received Honorable Mention All-Conference, breaking the all-time Viterbo kills record in the process.

A look at next year: Despite the losses of Harelstad and Breitung, look for the V-Hawks to contend for a championship once again next fall. Braaksma and Lau return, along with several other contributing underclassmen.

Men’s Soccer

What happened:  The team came agonizingly close to a conference championship, posting a 6-1-1 record that placed just behind Ashford’s 6-0-2 mark. Head coach Andy Lee’s squad finished the season 12-6-2 overall.

Standout athletes: A trio of British athletes made First Team All-Conference: freshman Mark Burton, sophomore James Lockley, and junior Jamie Robertson. Junior Tony Madigan earned Honorable Mention status.

A look at next year: With Tom Snow being the only departure, hopes are high for the V-Hawks. As close as the V-Hawks were to the top this past season, anything less than a conference championship would likely be a disappointment.
