In spring 2009, the Viterbo softball team struggled for nearly a month to earn its first win.

It didn't take nearly as long this time around.

The V-Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 start on their spring trip to Arizona, ending the trip with a 3-8 record. They notched victories against the College of St. Mary, Monmouth College, and Mount Marty College.

Junior shortstop Jenna Strait led the offensive effort, batting .361 and starting every game.  Kenisha McGuire and Betsy Ward also posted batting averages of .300 or better, and Jessica Reinert hit three home runs.

Bethanee Nitz, a freshman, led the team in innings pitched and had a 2.21 earned run average despite not picking up a win. Nitz also led the team with 15 strikeouts. Kallie Mechling was also very effective from the pitching position, picking up two wins and posting a 2.71 earned run average.

The team's home opener is scheduled for March 31, as they will host conference foe Clarke College in a doubleheader.
