Ken Barrett has been a coach for nearly 40 years, the vast majority of that time spent at La Crosse Central High School. In 2007, however, he decided to take on a new challenge, and accepted the women’s golf head coaching position at Viterbo.

After 13 games, the Viterbo baseball team finds itself battling for the top spot in the Midwest Collegiate Conference with a 9-4 conference record. The V-Hawks, Iowa Wesleyan, William Penn, Grand View, and Mount Mercy were all within a half game of one another for the conference lead at press time.

As a member of the Viterbo baseball team, I decided to keep a running diary of our spring break trip to Miami, Fla. Day 1:We departed from La Crosse at roughly 1 p.m. on Friday, March 5. After four movies, a few pit stops, and roughly 10 hours, we reached Paducah, Ky.

In spring 2009, the Viterbo softball team struggled for nearly a month to earn its first win. It didn’t take nearly as long this time around. The V-Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 start on their spring trip to Arizona, ending the trip with a 3-8 record.

For the first time in over a decade, the Viterbo University men’s basketball team can call itself conference champions. The V-Hawks are out of the conference tournament after losing to William Penn on Feb. 26 with a score of 68-75. The team earned itself a claim to the conference crown with a 75-63 victory over William Penn on Feb.

Simply put, it’s been a tough year for Coach Bobbi Vandenberg’s women’s basketball team. The V-Hawks currently carry a record of 6-21, 2-11 in the MCC Conference. With two separate losing streaks of five games or more, the team has had a hard time gaining any momentum throughout the season.

Former Green Bay Packer to be head coach
La Crosse will be one of the new homes to a professional football team, part of the Indoor Football League, starting with the kickoff to the season in March 2010. The IFL is a professional indoor league created in 2008 out of the merger between the Intense Football League and United Indoor Football.

The Viterbo women’s basketball team has had their fair share of struggles so far this season. The team is currently 2-6, with four of those losses coming by 20 points or more. Injuries have again been a problem for coach Bobbi Vandenberg’s squad, with starting point guard Brooke Anderson out for the year with a knee injury.

The last couple of months have been a roller coaster ride for Green Bay Packer fans like me. Of course, one man has contributed to our angst more than any other—as a result, the quarterback who used to be considered the savior of our franchise was roundly booed in his return trip to Lambeau field.

In the MCC conference tournament, the Viterbo men’s soccer team came even closer to being able to call themselves champions. After defeating William Penn in double overtime and knocking off rival Grand View by a 3-2 margin, the V-Hawks found themselves in the conference championship game with regular season winner Ashford.

Despite losing in the conference championship game, the Viterbo’s men’s soccer team had a breakout year. Their regular season record of 10-5-2 is an improvement from last year’s record of 7-11. The V-Hawks finished second in conference play behind Ashford University, Clinton, Iowa, and tied with Grand View University, Des Moines, Iowa.

In only its first year of existence, Viterbo bowling has become a powerhouse on the national level. Both the men’s and women’s squads are ranked in the top 25 teams in the nation for all colleges that have bowling programs. The women’s team is currently ranked 17th by CollegeBowling.

The Viterbo men’s basketball team opened their 2009-2010 season with a resounding 78-58 victory over Trinity Christian College. Eric Ambrose led the V-Hawks with 25 points, while Scott Buschman contributed 19 points and 15 rebounds. Ryan Ambrose and Cameron Johnson were also double-digit scorers for Viterbo, with 13 and 10 respectively.

Bea Foley is well-versed in running. As a nursing major, cross-country runner, and ROTC member at Viterbo, Foley has little time to sit around. On Oct. 17, all that running paid off. Foley helped lead the Viterbo women’s cross country team to a first-place finish in the Wisconsin Private Colleges State Championship meet, as the V-Hawks defeated second-place Beloit College by 19 points.

Last winter, the Viterbo women’s basketball team struggled to put a team together at times, having only eight healthy players for a portion of the season. With an exceptionally large and talented recruiting class, that should no longer be a problem for the V-Hawks this season.
