Dear Beth Dolder-Zieke,
Help! Graduation is just around the corner and I need to get a job so I don't end up living in my parents' basement. I've been hearing a lot lately about getting a job with the federal government. What's up with that?
Serious Senior,
Rebecca Thacker, senior English major
Dear Rebecca,
You're right –federal jobs are among the fastest growing sectors in our economy right now. Did you know that 60 percent of the current federal civilian work force will be eligible to retire within the next 10 years? If you're looking for a job with good pay and great benefits, then a job with the federal government might be right for you. Go to www.usa.gov to get information on different agencies. Check out the "Jobs and Education" link to see the "Best Places to Work in the Federal Government." Search for current job openings at www.usajobs.gov.
For more information about federal jobs, stop by the Career Services office in MRC 347 and ask for the publication, Job Choices 2010. This free publication includes a lot of information on the job search process. The friendly and helpful staff there is always happy to help you with your job search and career development questions.
