As the school year comes to a close, it is time to start thinking about what to do for the summer. Many students will be working, some will be traveling, and others may be taking classes. But there is still plenty of time to enjoy the sunshine.

Money is almost always an issue for students and the summer isn't any different. We spend our time working to save money for school in the fall and sometimes forget that there are a number of activities that can be enjoyed during the summer that cost little to nothing at all.

1. Go for a hike. Hiking is possibly the easiest and most inexpensive way to get out and enjoy the weather and nature. Hixon Forest is just one location in the La Crosse area that offers a range of trails with varying difficulty for novice to the experienced outdoors person.

2. Camping. Take a weekend trip to a campground in the area. Tent camping is affordable and can be enjoyed by just about anyone. It's also a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of life in town for a few days. Bring a group of friends and make a party of it, but make sure to pack up everything that you pack in. Leaving trash is not ok.

3. Take a walk through Riverside Park or the marshes. If you can't get away for the weekend, take advantage of the local walking venues. Walking is a great option for low-impact exercise and a great way to get some fresh air.

4. Biking. There are many trails around La Crosse that offer wonderful biking opportunities. Even if you don't have a bike, one can be rented downtown for as little as six dollars an hour. Biking is also another great and easy way to get some exercise and enjoy the weather at the same time.

5. Go to the beach. Pettibone beach is a great place to just relax and soak up the sun on a day that you don't have to work. Take a dip in the water or just stay on the beach and read a book. But don't forget your sunblock.

Summer in La Crosse can be enjoyed a number of ways, even by the strapped-for-cash college student. Just make sure to get outside as often as possible before we go back to the grind of the school year.
