Viterbo University’s Theatre & Music Theatre departments are closing out the season with a production of Anton Chekhov’s “Three Sisters,” an early 20th century drama set in provincial Russia.

“Three Sisters” revolves around the three sisters of the Prozorov family, Olya, Masha, and Irina, played by Charlotte Parker, Molly Pach, and Courtney Toepel, as their romantic aspirations and hopes for a better life hinge on a return to their former lives in Moscow and the soldiers and men they meet.

Playing some of the men in these sisters’ lives are students Steve Frankenfield, Scott Gibson-Uebele, and Matt Barnett, as well as Theatre professor David Gardiner. Afton Everett, another Viterbo student, also plays Natasha, the love interest and potential wife of the sisters’ brother, Andrey.

Rife with political metaphors and characterizations of the dissatisfaction many Russians felt at the time, Chekhov’s “Three Sisters” also has its share of comedy, bringing rays of light into the sisters’ existence of constant yearning and unfulfilled aspirations.

Viterbo’s production of this classic will start its run this Friday, April 23-24, returning Thursday, April 29-May 2. The production will be in the Black Box Theatre, with student tickets available at the Viterbo Box Office for $5.
